People in the rural Eastern Cape of South Africa face significant healthcare challenges due to historical neglect, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and those with chronic diseases. Bulungula Incubator, with Takeda's support, is implementing a community-driven healthcare approach in the remote Xhorha Mouth Administrative Area, strengthening integration with South Africa's national health system while demonstrating a replicable model for rural universal healthcare.
The program will establish a sustainable primary healthcare hub from an existing remote health post, empower community health workers, and promote health literacy among children and youth through local schools, sports events, and community radio. The program aims to reach over 3,200 direct beneficiaries, targeting a 20% reduction in both infant mortality (ages 0-3) and advanced-stage disease presentations at mobile clinics.
